National History
In the spring of 1996, Founding Monarch Melissa Jo Murchison-Blake was in search of sisterhood. She wanted to be part of a family that openly embraced all women and crossed cultural boundaries. As a bi-racial woman, she did not want to choose between historically Caucasian or African-American sororities. Founding Monarch Murchison-Blake felt that if she did choose one, she would be denying half of her heritage.
Still wanting to be part of a strong sisterhood, Founding Monarch Murchison-Blake recruited six other women to join hands in her quest to found Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. At first, the Founding Monarchs were discouraged from fulfilling their vision. The Director of Greek Affairs advised them to consider joining an existing organization, expressing his concern that a new Greek organization, based on the principle of multiculturalism, would not survive at UNC-CH. However, the Founding Monarchs believed there was a need for such a sisterhood. Their efforts set the stage for Theta Nu Xi's presence in the Greek, non-Greek, and surrounding communities.
After much work and dedication, the Founding Monarchs built the foundation for Theta Nu Xi. Finally, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill officially recognized Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority as the Alpha Chapter on April 11, 1997. With the collaborative efforts of the Founding Monarchs and the Sisters of Spring 1998, the organization grew beyond our expectations. The Sorority incorporated on April 29, 1999, and with the participation of the Alpha Chapter and Beta and Gamma Colonies, the National Organization was founded at the first annual National Convention on August 21, 1999.
Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was founded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, by seven diverse women who sought to create an inclusive sisterhood. The Founders chose to transcend traditional boundaries with the creation of a new Greek letter organization that would embody the ideals of scholarship, service, sisterhood, leadership, and multiculturalism. Despite being met with significant concerns about the viability of such an organization, the Founders held strong to their beliefs and pushed forward in creating the Sorority. Through their commitment and dedication, the dream of founding Theta Nu Xi came to fruition on April 11, 1997.

Chapter History
During the 2000 spring semester, Theta Nu Xi sought to establish a new chapter at Georgia State University. The idea caught the interest of Becky Gonzalez. After an initial interest meeting, Becky found that the Sorority's philosophies mirrored her own. However, the idea for a new chapter was put on hold due to lack of interest from other students.
After much time and anticipation, another interest meeting was held the following semester. There, Becky met several more women who shared her interest; one of those women was Leticia Simmons. Leticia had recently transferred from California State University in Los Angeles to GSU and was looking to meet new people. During her first semester at GSU, she discovered a flyer for the recruitment of new Theta Nu Xi members. As she learned more about the organization, she realized that it was exactly what she sought. Leticia found that she shared a common interest in the ideals of Theta Nu Xi. Seeing their dedication and motivation, Theta Nu Xi selected Becky and Leticia to continue the expansion of Theta Nu Xi at GSU. Together, Leticia and Becky united to make history both within Theta Nu Xi and GSU, as chapter founders. Thus, the Zealous Zeta chapter was born on December 10, 2000: the ONE and only. |
